This is the month of the Revelation of the Hidden Treasures. There are treasures to be revealed about you, in the things and people, at the place that God has planted you.
Today we are starting off with Traditional Religious Beliefs. Jesus taught that traditional beliefs should be grounded in God’s truth and not in human tradition. In the Bible, Jesus broke traditions that he considered to be in conflict with God’s commands.
At the end of today’s study, you should be able to question your traditional beliefs in the word of God and realigned your beliefs with the truth as God created it. May we all be enlightened in Jesus Name.
Bible Reading Matthew 15:1-9 https://www.bible.com/bible/114/MAT.15.1-9
Which Tradition(s) was Jesus talking about?
Examples of Jesus breaking Traditional Religious Beliefs (of the Law)
- Jesus Eating with “sinners”, people of dubious reputation. Matt 9:9-13 https://www.bible.com/bible/114/MAT.9.9-13
- Healing on the sabbath Mat 12:9-14 https://www.bible.com/bible/114/MAT.12.9-14
- Jesus, a Prostitute, and a Stone Throwing Mob John 8:1-11 https://www.bible.com/bible/114/JHN.8.1-11
- Can you mention of any other traditional religious beliefs Jesus broke?
What is the major problem with Traditional Religious beliefs in the Law?
The major problem with Religious Traditional Beliefs is that they can only try to do away with negatives. “Thou shalt not kill”, “Thou shalt not Steal”, etc. Love is the opposite to law in that it deals with the positives. You cannot legislate for love or define degrees of love. .
Why did Jesus break all these rules?
- Religious rules and traditions only placed burdens upon people. Matt 23:1-4https://www.bible.com/bible/114/MAT.23.1-4
- Jesus came to abolish the idea of trying to please God through (any) religion. John 4:20-24 https://www.bible.com/bible/114/JHN.4.20-24
- When religious rules get in the way of mercy, compassion and justice they should be overridden. Mat 12:9-14 https://www.bible.com/bible/114/MAT.12.9-14
Wrap up:
We all need to ask ourselves honestly,
- “Do I have any religious rules which get in the way of loving God with all my heart, and my neighbor as myself?”
- “What would Jesus have to say about religious rules today?”
