Lesson Introduction
In our last lesson we discussed some fundamental biblical prescriptions for making decisions as believers. Today, we shall proceed to highlight the lifestyle disciplines that every believer must cultivate to enhance both the discernment of God’s leading and the accurate and timely execution of divine guidance.
Lesson Outline
A. DEVELOPING DEVOTIONAL DISCIPLINES
B. WAITING ON THE LORD FOR DIRECTION
C. UNDERSTANDING GOD’S CALENDAR
A: DEVELOPING DEVOTIONAL DISCIPLINES
- Personal devotion involving prayer, fasting and study of God’s word on a consistent basis is a necessity for a healthy Christian walk, 1 Thess. 5: 17; 2 Tim. 3: 15-16; Daniel 9: 3.
- Jesus, though he was God-incarnate, still practiced consistent personal devotion to keep in step with the father’s will, Mark 1: 35; John 6: 15
When we develop our private devotional life, it becomes easier to receive guidance from God on a consistent basis, Psalm 25: 12, 14; Exodus 33: 11 (Amp), Exodus 34: 34 - As we become familiar with God’s word in meditation and practice, it becomes easier to discern His voice; His leading is always consistent with his word, John 10: 35b; Acts 17:11
B: WAITING ON THE LORD FOR DIRECTION
- In time of critical decision-making, it is advisable to separate yourself for a while and intensify on prayer, fasting and study.
We must do this in a place and atmosphere that is quiet with little distractions, Luke 6: 12-13; Psalm 131: 1-2 - In order to hear clearly from God, we must cultivate a sound fellowship and relationship with the person of the Holy Spirit.
This can be achieved by praying in faith to God to keep us full of the Spirit, Luke 11: 13; Romans 8: 14; Acts 8: 29;
Acts 10: 19; Ephesians 5: 18. - We should be faithful to God in obeying Him in minor matters so that we can be prepared to obey him in major issues. If you have not obeyed the last instruction, you will find it hard to hear God further. God guides us step-by-step and rarely reveals His whole plan to us at once, Isaiah 28: 10; Psalms 37: 23; Psalm 119: 133
C: UNDERSTANDING GOD’S CALENDAR
- After having developed the devotional habits for hearing God, we must also understand that God’s timing is different from man’s timing. Doing the right thing at the wrong time will cause chaos in our lives, Ecclesiastes 3: 1 1a; Acts 1: 6-7;
2 Peter 3: 8 - The divine calendar for our lives is set such that we must discern God’s will per time and seek to execute it, 1
Chronicles 12: 32; Luke 19: 44 - Jesus, our prime example, lived out this principle, John 9: 4; John 13:1
Conclusion
Sincere and focused prayer, sometimes accompanied by fasting, is essential when making life-altering decisions.
