Lesson Introduction
Decision-making is an integral aspect of human experience. In this lesson, we will be exploring the biblical teachings on this very vital theme. The choices we make are very crucial. For instance, salvation is a choice that determines our earthly and eternal destinies. There are other critical decisions such as marital, career, financial, parental, academic and medical to mention a few.
Lesson Outline
A. CHRISTIAN FOUNDATION FOR DECISION-MAKING
B. CLEARING OUT THE CLUTTER
A: CHRISTIAN FOUNDATION FOR DECISION-MAKING
- The first concept that we must establish is that God has a plan and purpose for our lives. Our divine-destinies are predetermined by God and our goal in our choices is to execute the plan of God and not ours – Ephesians 2: 10, Jeremiah
10: 23, Psalm 139: 16 (Amplified) - The second foundational principle is that of our value system.
Our decisions should be governed by kingdom-priorities and not just earthly considerations such as money, popularity, pleasure, and the like – Matthew 6: 33, Colossians 3: 1-2 - Another rudimentary concept is our understanding of eternal judgement. God will ultimately hold us accountable for the choices we make in our lifetime – Ecclesiastes 12:14; 2 Corinthians 5: 10
- The fourth foundational idea is that of mutuality. Our decisions often have an impact on other people for better or worse. We should understand that God has destined us to walk in partnership with other people such as spouses, children, employers, fellow believers etc. – Philippians 2: 4, Amos 3: 3, Acts 13: 2
- A final foundational concept to keep in mind is the concept of faith. Oftentimes, Christians have to make decisions without being completely sure of the outcomes. God’s instructions may require us to take a step of faith without fully knowing how it will all come together – Hebrews 11: 6, 8; Acts 20: 22
B: CLEARING OUT THE CLUTTER
- Having established this foundation, we must remove from our hearts any wrong motives and any interests that will compete with God – Acts 8: 18-24, Philippians 2: 20-21, 2 Timothy 2: 21
- We must also expunge stubbornness, doubt and unbelief from our hearts – James 4: 8, Hebrews 4:7
- Additionally, we must remove fear from our hearts. It takes boldness to follow God despite being misunderstood or threatened – Joshua 1: 7, 2 Timothy 1: 7-8
- A faulty conscience will become inaccurate and insensitive to divine guidance. We should make sure we have confessed all known sin when trying to discern God’s will – Titus 1: 15, 1 John 1: 9.
Conclusion
In order to lead lives that are well-pleasing to God we must make decisions that are consistent with His perfect will for us.
