LESSON INTRODUCTION
In John 4:1-24, we see Jesus breaking societal norms by speaking with a Samaritan woman at the well. This encounter teaches us that the love of Christ transcends cultural and social barriers. Jesus shows us that every person is valuable and worthy of His message. As it is written, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son” (John 3:16). We are called to follow His example and reach out to those who might be different from us, sharing the love of Christ without prejudice.
Today we are taking a deep dive into Christlike thinking and action.
Lesson Discussion
Lesson Text: John 4:1-15:
Brainstorm: What is the difference between Prejudice and Bias? What is the difference between setting boundaries and building Barriers?
Jesus broke cultural norms by speaking to a Samaritan woman. Jews and Samaritans typically avoided each other, and men did not publicly speak to women they were not related to.
- Why do you think it was significant that Jesus “had to pass through Samaria,” and how does this reflect God’s heart for all people?
- How does Jesus’ intentional journey through Samaria challenge you to be more intentional in executing your own divine potential?
- Reflect on a time when you felt called to step out of your comfort zone to reach someone different from you. What personal prejudices or biases limited your effective communication?
- Is it possible that your beliefs could limit you from being exposed to the Truth?
- In what ways can you break down cultural and social barriers, following Jesus’ example in this passage?
- Why are we so focused in the Church on “what thou shalt not do” more than focusing on “what thou shalt do”? .
- How does the disciples’ absence during Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman highlight the importance of being attentive to spiritual opportunities in our daily lives?
- What does the Samaritan woman’s initial response to Jesus reveal about her understanding of His offer of “living water” and her understanding of Jacob’s well?
Final Thoughts: Breaking Social and Cultural Barriers
Jesus’ interaction with the Samaritan woman breaks significant social norms, as Jews typically avoided Samaritans, and men did not publicly speak with women. This theme underscores Jesus’ mission to reach all people, regardless of societal divisions. Like Jesus, we are called to reach out to those who are different from us, breaking down cultural and social barriers with love and compassion.
Suggestion on Breaking barriers:
- Initiate conversations even when culture says “avoid.”
- Listen for thirst: beneath surface needs lie souls longing for eternal life.
A Spiritual Awakening is a call to higher consciousness and deeper mental awareness. The process of spiritual awakening brings about personal transformation and a shift in one’s worldview.
