Aug 27- Re-evaluating Priorities

Today we are taking another look on the Mary and Martha story which focuses on the sisters’ contrasting responses to Jesus’ visit, with Mary choosing to “sit at his feet” and learn, while Martha was “distracted by all the serving”.

  • The study explores themes of priorities in spiritual life,
  • the balance between contemplation and action,
  • the importance of focusing on words of Christ rather than worldly anxieties.

Text:Luke 10:38-42 , John 12:1-7 , John 11:1-3

The story of Mary and Martha in the Bible shows us two different approaches to following Jesus. While Martha works hard to welcome Jesus to her home. Her sister, Mary, simply sits at his feet and listens. Both Mary and Martha served Jesus.

  • How would you describe the relationship between Jesus and these ladies’ family?
  • Can you identify anyone in your life that you have the level of relationship you described above?

  • How did they serve Jesus?
  • Why do you think Mary “also” sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word?
  • What does “sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word ” mean to you?
  • Why was Martha “distracted with much serving”?
  • What does “Distracted with much serving” , mean to you?
  • Jesus didn’t condemn Martha for serving. What was his message to Martha on Re-evaluating Priorities?

  •  Which sister do you identify with most, and why?
  •   Are you usually worried or anxious about many things, or focused on the words of Christ to you?
  • What is the proper balance between active service and quiet contemplation in our being Christlike?
