Aug 20 – Speak Helpful Words

​​ Today we are looking at impact of spoken words on the hearer and speaker. Spoken words carry significant impact, shaping our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, as well as influencing our relationships and the world around us. Positive words can foster well-being, while negative words can negatively impact mental and physical health. The way we communicate, both to ourselves and others, can have profound and lasting effect.

Text:2 Kings 5:1-15

  • How might you define a “timely word”?
  • What was the slave girl’s relationship to Naaman?
  • Read Luke 6:27-28. What New Testament precepts are evident in the words of the slave girl?
  • What do the slave girl’s words and actions tell us about her nature?
  • From what source did her strength come?
  1. How does Elisha’s words provide a message of hope to the king of Israel? To Naaman? Where did Elisha find his source of confidence?
  2. Do you find speaking reassuring words difficult or easy? Why?
  3. Identify some possible reasons why Naaman was so “ticked off”!
  4. Why is hearing the truth sometimes difficult?
  5. Do you think we as Christians have the right/authority to offer instruction to others? Why or why not?
  6. What are some helpful principles to consider and apply priorto offering someone advice?
  7. Describe how the words of verse 13 were encouraging. Consider their relationship to Naaman, what might the servants actions say about their character?

  • Which is the greater miracle, Naaman’s healing or his testimony of belief in God?
  • What would you say was Elisha’s motive in helping Naaman?
  • What is comforting about the fact that God does not care about our social, monetary, political, or denominational status?
