John 5: 1-9

Lesson Introduction

In the last lesson, we discussed five main victories we have in Jesus: victory in times of confusion and/or fear, victory when the world is against you, victory at the point of giving up, victory over a rough past, and victory over sickness.
In today’s lesson, we will discuss four more and then wrap up with ways to secure that victory in Jesus.

A: VICTORY OVER REPEATED FAILURE

During one of the Holy Ghost Service, a brother once gave a testimony of how he took a specific exam for several years without passing it. Finally, he had an encounter with Jesus at the Redemption camp when the word of the Lord came from Daddy GO. After this encounter, he took the exam again and passed with flying colors. This is like the story of the man by the pool of Bethesda. After toiling for so long and seeing his miracle slip by repeatedly, Jesus stepped in and ended that repeated failure. Jesus sent His word and ended stagnation and repeated failure (of 38 years). He ended Hannah’s repeated failure of conception, 1 Samuel 1: 1-20. He ended Isaac’s toil of digging well only for it to be snatched off from him, Genesis 26: 19-22. Only Jesus can give total victory over failures in academics, careers, family, marriage, Genesis 24: 1-
27, etc. Are there areas in your life that you’ve been experiencing repeated failures? The good news is this: Jesus brings an end to it today. Amen.

B: VICTORY OVER SORROW

The scripture shows us that Satan is the source of sorrow, John 10: 10 while Jesus is the source of joy, Luke 2: 10. When all was going well with Job and his family, Satan urged God to test him with suffering, and this brought sorrow to him, Job 2:
3. This is the trick of the devil. He fights the children of God.
He is our adversary, 1 Peter 5: 8. The devil’s goal is not just to bring sorrow, he wants to multiply the sorrow. We see an example in, Luke 7: 11-17 with the widow of Nain who was going to bury her only son. After the sorrow she had to go through with the loss of her husband, he still afflicted the son until he eventually died. We know the will of God in this situation wasn’t for the son to die. This is why the One who has all victory in Himself – Jesus – intervened and brought the son back to life. Jesus can give you victory over anything causing you sorrow. Jesus has the power to wipe away every tear of sorrow, Rev. 21: 4, Isaiah 25: 8, Isaiah 53: 4. Call on Him today.

C.VICTORY FROM ADDICTION OR HOPELESS SITUATIONS

Addictions are those things that we have no control over again. They are those things that have power over us, 1
Corinthians 6: 12. There are some who are addicted to living in the flesh. They just cannot say no to the desires of the flesh even when they know God’s position on such, Galatians 5: 16-
26. When a child of God fails to break free and instead continues to live in that addiction, the result is usually terrible,
2 Peter 2: 19-20. The story in, Mark 9: 20-22 gives us a picture of how addiction works. First, it is controlled by a spirit.
Second, it occurs periodically. Third, the victim is powerless and helpless against the spirit. Fourth, it causes disgrace and embarrassment. Fifth, it is no respecter of age, social status, race, etc. The earlier you call on Jesus to deliver you from all sorts of addiction, the earlier you secure your victory.
In the story of Lazarus, we also learn that there is no situation Jesus cannot bring us out of, regardless of how hopeless it looks, John 11: 25-26. It is our responsibility to call unto Jesus to deliver us from death and hopeless situations, John 11: 3.
This is where prayer kicks in. It is our responsibility to pray and pray until Jesus gives us complete victory, 2 Kings 20: 1-6.

D. Accessing the victory in Christ

Now that we know that in Jesus lies all the victory we desire, how then do we gain access to it? Two of the biggest ways to access the victory Christ has given us is through the Holy Spirit and His Word.

The Holy Spirit – Because Jesus wants our complete victory, He has given us the Holy Spirit – John 14: 15-18.
There are several reasons why we need the Holy Spirit to ensure victory is secured and kept.

We need the Holy Spirit to help us out of temptation, Josh 1: 8
To guide us, Psalm 119: 105
To reveal the things of the Father to us, 1
Corinthians 2: 10.
To shape us into God’s image and nature, 2
Corinthians 3: 18
To help us in times of weakness, Romans 8: 26

The Word of God
The word of God gives us direction – The word of God gave Elijah direction when he was fleeing from Jezebel,
1 Kings 19: 9-18). The Word of God keeps us from sinning against God, Joshua 1: 8; Psalm 119: 9-16;
Psalms 119: 105. It is our responsibility to read His word, meditate on the word, hide His word in our heart, and ultimately obey His word.

Conclusion

In both parts of this topic, we have mentioned the different areas Jesus can give us victory. It’s important to note victory in Jesus isn’t limited to what’s covered in part 1 and 2 of this study. There’s a lot more victories we can access in Christ. Remember, the provision for victory already exists in Christ. It’s your responsibility to access it.
Victory is guaranteed in Jesus. However, to continue working in the victory, we must continue working in the Holy Ghost. It is our responsibility to keep our body under strict discipline; 1 Corinthians 9:27, Genesis 4: 7; Romans 6:12. Don’t cover your sin. Confess and forsake them, Proverbs 28: 13. Be accountable.
