V 1-6
Many people gathered there to listen to Jesus. Their initial reaction was astonishment. They realized that Jesus had extraordinary wisdom. They knew that He had also done amazing miracles. Intellectually, they could agree that Jesus’ teachings were full of wisdom and that He Himself was very powerful. And yet despite their intellectual agreement and initial favorable conclusion, as a group they ended up rejecting Christ
- Why did They reject Him?
- Why couldn’t Jesus do miracles there? Did He lose His power?
- How did Jesus react to their rejection?
V7-13
Jesus commissions the twelve disciples and sends them out in pairs to preach, heal, and cast out demons. He instructs them to rely on God’s provision and hospitality during their mission, emphasizing simplicity and trust in God
- What was Jesus intention concerning His disciples?
- Why do you think He sent them out in pairs?
- What instructions did He give them?
- Why did He tell them not to take bread, bag, or money? Are there situations we should obey this principle today?
- What were they sent to do?
- What were they to do if the town didn’t listen to them?
V30-44
Feeding of the Five Thousand (Mark 6:30-44): In a remote place, a large crowd gathers around Jesus. Moved by compassion, He miraculously multiplies a small amount of food (five loaves and two fish) to feed the multitude. This event emphasizes Jesus’ divine power and His concern for the physical needs of the people
- Is it OK to have some time to ourselves for rest or is that being lazy when there is work to be done?
- Did the crowds respect their wishes and give them time alone? What can we learn from this about human nature?
- Are there people in your lives who need a lot of attention even when you don’t feel like giving it?
- What did Jesus do when He saw His plans had been messed up? Is there anything we can learn from Jesus’ attitude here?
- Why did Jesus have compassion on them? Do you feel likewise when looking at the masses of people around you?
- Why do you think Jesus asked the disciples to give them something when He knew they wouldn’t have been able to?
- What observations do you have about the miracle which Jesus performed?
- Are you a spectator or participant in the body of Christ. Serving the body of Christ can take many different forms, but each of us should be doing something. Are you?
V45-52
After feeding the multitude, Jesus sends His disciples ahead in a boat while He goes to pray. During the journey, the disciples encounter a storm, and Jesus walks on the water to join them. His presence calms the storm and amazes the disciples, revealing His divine nature
- Why did Jesus make the disciples get in the boat and send them to the other side without him?
- What did Jesus do when everyone had left? What does this show us about His character? Why did He pray in private?
- How is your prayer life? Are you faithful to pray to the Lord on your own or just at church?
- What was their reaction to seeing Jesus walking on the water?
- What happened when Jesus got on the boat?
Sometimes God sees fit to let us experience trials for awhile in order to develop our character. Jesus saw His disciples struggling against the wind. Actually, they were already very tired at this point and this would have pushed them almost to the point of exhaustion.
V53-56
Upon arriving in Gennesaret, Jesus is recognized, and people bring the sick to Him. Even touching the fringe of His garment results in healing, illustrating His continuing ministry of compassion and miraculous healing.
- What did Jesus do for the people of Gennesaret?
- What did the locals do when they saw him?
Do not get upset if you feel people are taking advantage of you. Instead have compassion on their lost souls. When you see a need, fill it, even if you are a tired. Make sure that you show proper appreciation and consideration for others when requesting a favor.
