LESSON INTRODUCTION
Values are the core beliefs, principles, or standards that guide how people make decisions, judge behavior, and choose what is important in life.
Today we are looking at how your Personal Values influence your view of life and how you choose to live your life.
Discussion Outline
We are looking at how Personal Values played out in the story of Jesus visit to the home of Martha and Mary.
ReadLuke 10:38-42
- What is your default mode when guests come over, are you more like Martha (rushing around to clean and prep) or Mary (sitting down to chat)?
- What is one thing that most easily distracts you or makes you feel anxious during a busy week?
- What was Martha’s emotional state in verse 40?
- Look at Martha’s request to Jesus. Who is she frustrated with, and what does this reveal about how stress affects our relationships with others and with God?
- Contrast the actions of Mary and Martha. What did Mary value in that moment, and what did Martha value?
- Jesus says Martha is “worried and upset about many things.” Is Jesus saying that hospitality, cooking, and serving are wrong or bad? Why or why not?
- What do you think Jesus means by the phrase “only one thing is needed”?
- Are you “serving”, at church, home, or work, out of love or obligation?
- How can we tell when our “serving” has crossed the line into an anxious distraction?
- Finding your “Mary moments”: What does sitting at Jesus’ feet look like in your actual daily routine?
Summary
Regardless of where your particular value set comes from, what matters is that it’s true to you and how you choose to live your life. When people choose to make decisions that aren’t based on their personal values, they may feel dissatisfied.
If we accept things without Critical thinking without question or without evidence we are not only ignorant we are immoral.
